M02 Overview/Task List
It is important to understand the role of the brain in mental processes. Similarly, it is helpful to understand what a neuron is, how it functions, how it collects and transmits information, and how chemical reactions affect thought, feeling, and action. Psychologists understand daily activities differently, knowing how and why people engage in the activities the way they do.
The brain and nervous system consist of networks of neurons, or individual nerve cells. Neurons are designed to do three things: receive information from other neurons, process that information, and transmit it to the rest of the body. When communication between neurons becomes necessary, they release neurotransmitters into the synaptic gap (the natural gap that exists between neurons). Neurotransmitters are the chemical messengers that facilitate messages between neurons in the form of an electric charge. Neuropeptides are chemicals which regulate the activity of neurons in the brain. Biological and chemical events in the brain help explain behavior.
