Course Overview

The major objective of this class is to learn to identify, describe, and apply basic principles of psychology to human behavior.  By successfully completing this course, you will have gained experience thinking critically about psychological research and interpreting it in the context of multiple psychological perspectives, and you should be able to apply psychological theories and research to practical settings including your own personal and academic success. 

Student Learning Outcomes

  • Successful students will be able to identify and distinguish major psychological perspectives (behavioral, biological, clinical, cognitive, developmental, humanistic, psychodynamic, and sociocultural) and associated concepts.
  • Successful students will be able to identify and distinguish the relative strengths and weaknesses of descriptive, correlational, and experimental methods in psychological science.
  • Successful students will be able to use the science, methods and findings of psychology to address topics related to behavior and mental processes.

Course Expectations

Each student is expected to treat others with courtesy and to adhere to SBCC's "Standards of Student Conduct.”  In addition, students should not disrupt the class at any time with electronic devices.

Grading

Your grade will be based on four factors:  (1)  weekly quizzes, (2)  assignments,  (3) discussion postings, and (2) exams.

Exams

One midterm exam and a final exam will be given during the semester.The midterm is worth 100 points and the final is worth 100 points.  These exams will consist of multiple-choice and matching questions.   

Class Participation

Arriving on time and prepared for class is very important.  Your active participation in discussions, demonstrations, and class activities is expected.  Remember, forging another students signature on an in-class assignment or sign in sheet is an act of academic dishonesty and will be dealt with as such.

Final Grade Assignment

Final grades will be assigned based on the following point breakdown: A = 90% and above, B = 80-89%, C = 70-79% and D = 60-69%.  A grade of 60% or more is required to pass the course. 

If you choose to stop participating in the course by not attending class and/or not completing assignments/exams, you will receive an FW.  Please be aware that receiving an FW can affect your student visa eligibility (contact the International Students Office for more information).  An FW may also restrict your access to other benefits provided to full time students such as financial aid (contact the Financial Aid Department for more information).

Academic Standards

Academic honesty is expected at all times (see http://sbcc.edu/security/standards_of_conduct.php).  Submitting plagiarized material will result in an “F” grade on the plagiarized assignment.  Cheating on exams in any form will result in an "F" grade on that exam.  Incidents of academic dishonesty may also be reported to appropriate college officials.  

Drop Deadline

If you find it necessary to drop the course, it is your responsibility to complete all appropriate paperwork with the Admissions & Records Office by the drop deadline (October 22, 2021 with a “W”).  If you do not drop by this deadline, the instructor must assign a grade.
